Workshops

Frustrated with trying to learn folk music ‘from the book’?

Wish you hadn’t given up the violin lessons?

"It doesn't have to be like this"

Would you like to play in a group without having to tackle difficult orchestral parts?

No need to learn to read music.

Join in with as little as a one year experience of playing the fiddle.

Improve your listening skills & learn a few new tunes.

Individual Lessons are also available. A course of lessons would be necessary for absolute beginners wanting to join any workshop.

Workshops are mixed ability and are designed to allow multi-layered involvement, starting with rhythmic cycles and open string rhythmic bowing patterns, then building up a contour of the tune and finally filling in the details and looking at variation and ornamentation.
Participants are encouraged to 'stick' at the level they are comfortable with and to relax and enjoy the overall sound and playing in a group rather than to feel they have to learn every detail of the tune in one session.

Recent workshops have included tunes from Ireland, Shetland, Soweto, Turkey, Hungary, Cajun Country, the Appalachian mountains and Quebec. All workshop tunes are uploaded to a secure area of this site where you can access them for practice after the day.

Please email Hazel if you would like to discuss organising a workshop in your area.
